Foden banned, Semenyo and O'Reilly doubts: Man City's injury concerns ahead of Liverpool
Manchester City face a testing trip to Anfield on Sunday with Phil Foden serving the final game of a three-match ban and both Antoine Semenyo and Nico O'Reilly carrying injuries sustained during the international break.
Manchester City head to Anfield on Sunday for their Premier League clash against Liverpool with a depleted squad, as Phil Foden completes a three-match suspension and two further players remain doubts after picking up injuries on international duty.
Phil Foden
Foden will miss the Liverpool fixture after receiving a red card in the Manchester derby last month. The playmaker has already sat out the Carabao Cup win over Norwich City and the Premier League victory over Sunderland, and Sunday’s trip to Merseyside marks the final game of his ban.
Antoine Semenyo
Winger Antoine Semenyo is a doubt after withdrawing from the Ghana squad during the international break with a swollen leg. Ghana FA president Kurt Okraku confirmed the extent of the issue, explaining that Semenyo and the coaching staff agreed it was better for him to continue his recovery at club level rather than risk further damage.
“His leg is swollen,” Okraku told Asempa FM. “You’d have to ask yourself whether you’d allow Antoine to continue with his recovery and be ready for Man City and for Ghana during the next window.”
It remains to be seen whether Semenyo will be fit in time to face Liverpool.
Nico O’Reilly
Defender Nico O’Reilly also returned early from international duty after sustaining an injury while on England Under-21 duty, which included their 3-2 defeat to Spain. O’Reilly was sent back to City for further assessment, and his availability for Sunday is similarly uncertain.
Wider context
The Liverpool fixture is City’s first Premier League outing in three weeks and comes at a significant moment for the club. City have won all five of their opening top-flight matches and will be looking to maintain that perfect record at Anfield. The game also follows last week’s news that City were found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League. The club are denying any wrongdoing and submitted their appeal before last Friday’s deadline.
