Luis Enrique furious after Brest: "It's the worst of the four matches we've played"
PSG secured their first Ligue 1 victory of the season with a 1-0 win at Brest on Sunday thanks to an early goal from Ferran Torres, but Luis Enrique made no effort to hide his frustration with a performance he deemed insufficient, rescued by goalkeeper Safonov.
Paris Saint-Germain claimed their first Ligue 1 victory of the season with a 1-0 win away at Stade Brestois on Sunday, but Luis Enrique emerged from the success more irritated than relieved. Ferran Torres had opened the scoring as early as the 5th minute, suggesting a comfortable evening for the Parisians.
What followed was far less controlled. Unable to extend their lead despite several chances, the Red and Blue multiplied defensive errors, offering Brest numerous opportunities to equalize. It was goalkeeper Matvei Safonov who preserved Paris’s advantage with several decisive saves.
Speaking after the match, Luis Enrique made no attempt to hide his displeasure. “It’s incredible that we won this match when it was the worst of the four we’ve played,” said the Asturian coach. A particularly harsh assessment given that PSG had drawn twice against Rennes and Lille (2-2) and then lost to Monaco (1-2) before this trip to Brittany. “I was more satisfied with the first three matches that we didn’t win,” he added, categorically.
The Spanish manager, particularly animated on the sideline throughout the match, emphasized the nature of his state of mind: “Today, I think we made a lot of mistakes. It’s the day when I’m most annoyed or frustrated.” This level of demand contrasts with his comments from the previous week, after the home defeat to Monaco, when he said he had seen “many positive things” and believed his team deserved victory.
Despite his outburst, Luis Enrique tempered his remarks with a touch of pragmatism: “I’m very happy because at the end of the season, everything balances out and we deserve what we’re seeking to have.” Three points taken, but a clear message sent to his players.
