Lille suffered a cruel 2-3 defeat against Real Betis in its first league phase match of the Champions League, despite twice taking the lead during the encounter.
The Dogues had seemed capable of securing a positive result by going ahead twice, but the Seville club ultimately turned the tables to win. The turning point came with the red card shown to Ethan Mbappé, which left Lille down to ten men and gave the Spanish side the space needed to finish the job.
Reduced to ten players, the northern club could not withstand Betis’s pressure, who scored the winning goal to secure a deserved victory in light of the match’s closing stages. It is a particularly difficult start to their European campaign for LOSC, who must quickly recover to avoid compromising their ambitions in the competition.
