Charles Leclerc was eliminated from the Italian Grand Prix on lap two after losing the rear of his Ferrari through the high-speed Parabolica right-hander at Monza, triggering a red flag that halted the race while barrier repairs were carried out. The Ferrari driver walked away from the wreckage unhurt.

Leclerc had been defending fourth position from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri when a snap of oversteer sent him spinning into the outside barriers at pace. The incident was quickly upgraded from a safety car to a full red flag, forcing race officials to suspend proceedings.

The crash capped a damaging opening to the race for Ferrari on home soil. At the start, Leclerc had pushed team-mate Lewis Hamilton wide, dropping the Briton to eighth place before the lap-two retirement ended his own afternoon entirely.

With Leclerc out, the race restarted with Mercedes’ George Russell leading, having taken over at the front from surprise polesitter Pierre Gasly in the Alpine.
