Emmanuel Latte Lath has backed Michael Carrick to navigate Manchester United’s troubled start to the season, describing the manager as someone who “never screams like crazy” and instead relies on calm analysis and open communication with his players.

Carrick’s side are winless in five games across all competitions and have recorded just two victories so far this campaign. The pressure is mounting, but Latte Lath — who worked under Carrick at Middlesbrough — insists that composure under fire is precisely what defines his former coach.

“From my experience, when we were in a difficult situation, he never screamed like crazy, he just tried to analyse the moment and analyse the players and help us talking,” said the striker. “He knew how to listen to us and also how to spoke with us.”

Latte Lath was signed by Carrick at Boro in 2023 and spent 18 months at the Riverside, scoring 29 goals in 67 appearances before departing for Atlanta FC in an MLS record deal worth $22 million. He has since moved to Union Berlin.

Reflecting on how Carrick helped him develop as a player, Latte Lath was effusive. “Calm, calm, calm coach, and observe and looks at everything — he tries to bring the best of myself. The main word I have to say is observer.”

The endorsement offers a character reference from someone who experienced Carrick’s methods first-hand during a difficult period at a Championship club. Whether that measured temperament proves sufficient to turn around fortunes at a club with considerably higher expectations remains to be seen.
