Guendouzi starts against Slavia Prague after suspension reduced in Champions League
Sanctioned for his behaviour during the qualifying tie against Lyon, Mattéo Guendouzi returns to the Champions League with Fenerbahçe this Tuesday (18:45) for matchday 3, alongside Kanté and Greenwood.
Mattéo Guendouzi starts for Fenerbahçe in the home fixture against Slavia Prague on Tuesday, for matchday 3 of the Champions League. The French international plays his second Champions League match this season after serving a one-match suspension.
Recap: on 26 August, during the second leg playoff against Lyon at Groupama Stadium, the 28-year-old midfielder sparked a major controversy by taunting the Lyon supporters at length following Fenerbahçe’s qualification. UEFA initially handed him a four-match ban with two suspended, before reducing the sanction to three matches with two suspended. Guendouzi therefore missed only one league phase match: the 1-1 draw against Roma on 10 September in Istanbul.
Last week, he was already back for the trip to England, where Fenerbahçe suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Aston Villa — a severe loss marked by braces from Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley, and goals from Johan Manzambi and Tammy Abraham.
On Tuesday at Stade Şükrü Saracoglu, manager Ismail Kartal also fields N’Golo Kanté, Mason Greenwood, Ederson, Milan Skriniar, Nelson Semedo and Vedat Muriqi. Fenerbahçe, who have not yet won in the Champions League this season, are seeking their first points against Slavia Prague.
