Lamine Yamal ghosted at Clasico, Spanish press ruthless ahead of Ballon d'Or
Author of a very discreet performance in Barcelona's defeat to Real Madrid (2-1), Lamine Yamal is severely criticized by Spanish media, both Madrid and Catalan outlets, on the eve of the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris.
Lamine Yamal failed to make an impact on the Clasico won by Real Madrid at Camp Nou (2-1) on Sunday, and the Spanish press spared him no criticism the day after an evening that comes at the worst possible time for the Barcelona prodigy, just hours before the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris.
On the Madrid side, Marca and Diario AS highlighted the gap in influence with Kylian Mbappé, who scored the two decisive goals for Real. Marca particularly emphasized the Barcelona player’s helplessness against opposing marking: “expected to deliver before the Ballon d’Or presentation, the Barça prodigy never managed to shake off the marking on his flank,” the newspaper wrote, underlining the effectiveness of the double-marking organized by the merengue defense to isolate him.
Catalan newspapers adopted a more measured tone, without absolving their player. Sport speaks of “a gray night for Lamine at the worst of times,” while recalling his very good start to the season statistically. The editorial nonetheless points out a big missed opportunity just before the break and concedes that “this Clasico will leave its mark.” Mundo Deportivo for its part evokes “the painful learning of the heights,” noting that despite constant effort and defensive support, Yamal “ran into a well-organized block without managing to turn the match around.”
While Ballon d’Or votes have been closed for a long time, the symbolism of this failed duel on the eve of the big Parisian evening fuels debate in Spanish media. No one questions the player’s immense potential or his overall statistics since the start of the season, but observers agree that this underperformance is a stain difficult to ignore as Yamal positions himself as a serious contender for the trophy.
