Lamine Yamal approaches the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain with 1,042 minutes in his legs across all competitions, the highest volume among attackers from both teams and one of the heaviest workloads in all of La Liga at this stage of the season.

The debate resurfaced after PSG’s victory over Manchester City (4-2) in the Champions League. The French champions are regularly accused of benefiting from a less competitive league to manage their key players: while Luis Enrique rotated his squad against Le Mans, City had to battle Liverpool the previous weekend. This weekend again, PSG host Strasbourg while Barcelona travel to Real Betis, where Yamal is expected to start.

The Catalan prospect alone illustrates the contrast between the two clubs. Despite eight wins in eight La Liga matches and 34 goals scored — a Barcelona side also dominating their league — Hansi Flick has given his winger only two brief early substitutions: 25 minutes of rest against Elche (5-0) and 24 against Levante (4-2). As a result, Yamal is Barcelona’s most-used player and ranks among the very first in La Liga.

Only Kylian Mbappé (900 minutes) and defender Renato Veiga (900 minutes) surpass him among the so-called “European” players in the Spanish league. The comparison with Mbappé deserves nuance, however: the Frenchman played only 59 minutes in the Nations League before getting injured, while Yamal accumulated 281 under the Spanish shirt. As for Veiga, his centre-back profile involves less explosive physical demands.

Facing him, PSG’s attackers show significantly lower tallies: 778 minutes for Désiré Doué, 857 for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia — heavily used by Georgia in international football — and just 689 for Ousmane Dembélé, across all competitions (Ligue 1, Champions League, Nations League, Trophée des Champions and European Super Cup included). The gap with Yamal exceeds 180 minutes in each case, equivalent to two full matches.

If concern about workload management should exist before this European clash, it points more toward the Catalan side than the Parisian one.
