Konsa's £51m Arsenal move confirmed but registration rules rule him out against Coventry
Arsenal have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for an initial £51 million, but the 28-year-old defender will miss Friday's Premier League opener against Coventry City due to a registration deadline.
Arsenal have wrapped up the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal worth an initial £51 million, with a further £4 million in add-ons, but the centre-back will not feature in the club’s Premier League season opener against Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, 21 August.
Konsa missed the registration cut-off of 12pm on Thursday — the last working day before a fixture — which means he cannot be included in Mikel Arteta’s squad for the curtain-raiser. The 28-year-old had only returned to training last week after being granted an extended break following England’s World Cup campaign.
The defender has signed a four-year contract with the option of a fifth year, becoming one of Arteta’s most significant additions to a squad that claimed the title last season. His debut is now expected to come against his former club on 31 August, when Arsenal travel to Villa Park for their second Premier League fixture of the season, though whether Arteta pitches him straight into the starting line-up remains to be seen.
Konsa spent several years at Villa Park establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s more reliable centre-backs, earning consistent England recognition along the way. His move to Arsenal represents a significant step up in terms of the club’s immediate ambitions, and the fee reflects his standing in the domestic game.
Arsenal and Coventry have met 76 times in competitive football, with the Gunners holding a commanding head-to-head record of 43 wins to Coventry’s 14, alongside 19 draws. Friday’s match kicks off at 8pm UK time at the Emirates Stadium.
