Kane's double rescues England against DR Congo to set up Mexico last-16 clash
Harry Kane struck twice in Atlanta to drag England back from behind and seal a 2-1 win over DR Congo, booking a last-16 meeting with Mexico in Mexico City on Sunday. The goals move Kane level with Erling Haaland on five tournament goals.
Harry Kane scored twice in Atlanta on Wednesday to complete England’s 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup, securing a last-16 tie against Mexico in Mexico City on Sunday.
England were made to work hard by an organised DR Congo side whose goalkeeper produced a string of outstanding saves, but Kane’s brace ultimately proved the difference and lifted him level with Erling Haaland on five tournament goals — one behind the joint leaders Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
After emotional scenes at full-time, Kane delivered a message to his teammates urging them to savour the moment rather than treat the win as routine. “Sometimes as an England player, games you’re expected to win, you don’t celebrate as you should,” Kane told BBC Sport. “We’re the same as every other nation — we’re through, but enjoy it, we’re at the World Cup.”
Kane described the contest as England’s best attacking performance of the tournament while acknowledging there is still room for improvement. “A tough team, an organised team, we upped the level,” he said. “You have to stay patient in these games — knockout football, the pressure is higher.”
The captain also highlighted the impact of substitutes in keeping England’s level high across 90 minutes, referencing the influence of players who came off the bench. “The subs making an impact, keeping the level higher — over 90 minutes we’re tough to handle,” he added.
England now turn their attention to a demanding trip to Mexico City, where they will face the host nation in front of a partisan crowd. Kane was clear-eyed about the challenge ahead. “Away in Mexico, against Mexico, we have to grind wins out. We’re fighting for every moment and little margin. Let’s keep it going.”
