England fans erupt at Manchester fan zone as Three Lions beat DR Congo to reach last eight
Hundreds of supporters at Depot Mayfield in Manchester celebrated wildly as England defeated DR Congo on Wednesday, securing a quarter-final meeting with Mexico on July 5.
England’s 2026 World Cup knockout win over DR Congo on Wednesday sparked jubilant scenes at Manchester’s Depot Mayfield fan zone, where hundreds of supporters erupted the moment Harry Kane’s side sealed the victory late in the match.
The crowd had been building in anticipation throughout the afternoon, but it was England’s second goal, struck close to the final whistle, that sent the fan zone into pandemonium — fists raised, drinks aloft, and deafening cheers rolling across the venue.
There was a brief flash of frustration mid-match when players left the pitch for a hydration break, drawing boos from the crowd directed at the big screens. The mood quickly recovered, however, and the final whistle triggered a wave of relief and celebration that spilled well beyond the stadium-style setting.
Confetti rained over the crowd as supporters broke into a singalong of Sweet Caroline, a staple of England fan gatherings. The party then continued at nearby Freight Island, where fans danced on tables and celebrated long into the evening.
The result moves England into the next round, where they will face Mexico on July 5.
