Johnny Walker steps up to headline UFC Vegas 124 after Brady injury forces late reshuffle
Sean Brady's withdrawal nine days out has upended UFC Vegas 124's main event, with Johnny Walker now set to face Waldo Cortes-Acosta in a short-notice heavyweight bout on 7 November in Las Vegas.
A late injury to Sean Brady has forced the UFC to rebuild its 7 November card from the top, with Johnny Walker (23-10, 1 NC) reportedly stepping in to face Waldo Cortes-Acosta (17-4) in a short-notice heavyweight main event at UFC Vegas 124 at the Apex in Las Vegas.
Brady and Gabriel Bonfim had been scheduled to headline the welterweight card, but Brady pulled out nine days before the event. The promotion initially looked for a replacement opponent to keep Bonfim on the bill, but that search proved unsuccessful. Bonfim (20-1) confirmed on Instagram that he is no longer competing at UFC Vegas 124.
The new main event was first reported by Brazilian journalist Laerte Viana. Walker’s promotion to headliner comes on the back of a strong heavyweight debut: at UFC 332, he knocked out Mick Parkin in the first round and earned a Performance of the Night bonus, signalling a potentially significant move up in weight class.
Cortes-Acosta arrives at the bout having shown genuine stoppage power earlier in his career, winning three consecutive fights by finish. His last two outings, however, ended in decisions losses — to Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes — against the upper tier of the heavyweight division, leaving him looking to arrest a two-fight skid.
The pairing gives the card a credible headliner at short notice, with both fighters carrying legitimate knockout threats in a division where a single exchange can end a fight. Walker’s ability to secure a main event slot at heavyweight, having only recently moved up, underlines the UFC’s confidence in his drawing power and finishing ability.
