JJ Gabriel stuns Manchester United by requesting to leave as youngest-ever debut loomed

Manchester United have been left stunned after teenage prodigy JJ Gabriel formally requested to leave the club, just days before he was set to feature in a matchday squad that would have made him the youngest debutant in the club’s history.

The request blindsided United officials, who had been operating under the belief that Gabriel was on an accelerated path to the first team. The timing was particularly jarring: Gabriel had scored a hat-trick for the club’s youth side against Sabah’s youth team just days earlier, with his manager Adam Lawrence describing him as being in a “good place” after the final whistle. Within an hour of that performance, Gabriel’s social media accounts were wiped of any reference to Manchester United, leaving only a Nike Football tag — a signal, in hindsight, that something had shifted.

The revelation has caused internal confusion at the club. United believe the situation may still be salvageable, partly because Gabriel cannot be de-registered under the terms of his current contract. Next summer, however, would present a genuine exit window, and the club are determined not to let it come to that.

An industry source has suggested the dispute could be resolved financially, though whether an improved offer would be sufficient — and how far United are willing to go — remains unclear.

The club have gone to considerable lengths to demonstrate Gabriel’s importance to their long-term plans. He was unveiled alongside Cristiano Ronaldo’s son in the Old Trafford press conference room on the day he joined. United arranged a call between Gabriel and Marcus Rashford, organised a meeting with head coach Ruben Amorim at Carrington, and facilitated a brief conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson. His family have been welcomed into the directors’ box on multiple occasions.

Underpinning the tension is a longer-running family ambition. Gabriel’s father, a former professional whose own career was cut short by injury, has reportedly long harboured a dream of seeing his son play for Barcelona. United have always been aware that no amount of internal investment could fully neutralise that pull.

The club’s commitment to Gabriel has been extraordinary for a player of his age. In April 2025, he made his Under-18 debut at just 14. When he came close to leaving the club shortly afterwards, an eleventh-hour meeting — attended by then-director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada — persuaded him to stay, underlining just how highly he is regarded at the highest levels of the organisation.

With Gabriel’s contract still active and United unwilling to give up on retaining him, the coming weeks are likely to prove decisive in determining whether one of English football’s most coveted young talents remains at Old Trafford.
