JJ Gabriel scores record hat-trick on UEFA Youth League debut as Man Utd eye first-team call-up

Manchester United’s 15-year-old striker JJ Gabriel made history on his UEFA Youth League debut, scoring a hat-trick in a 5-0 thrashing of Sabah FK Under-19s to become the youngest player ever to net a treble for the club in European competition, aged just 15 years and 339 days.

Gabriel struck in the 45th, 85th and 87th minutes to cap a commanding performance that has further elevated his status as one of the most exciting prospects in United’s academy. The result adds to an already impressive run of form for the teenager, who scored and provided two assists on his United Under-21s debut in a 5-0 win over Ipswich Town last month.

First-team manager Michael Carrick was present for that earlier outing and offered warm praise afterwards. “I thought the boys played ever so well, actually. Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see the quality,” Carrick said. “I really enjoyed the game. Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good. So, really encouraged by that.”

Speculation is now growing over whether Gabriel could make his senior debut before he turns 16 in October. Premier League eligibility rules require a player to have reached 15 on or before August 31 of the relevant season, meaning Gabriel was ineligible last campaign but qualifies for the 2026/27 season. An appearance before his birthday would make him Manchester United’s youngest-ever first-team player.

The pathway from academy to senior football has been made more deliberate by a tactical decision from Under-21s head coach Adam Lawrence, who has switched his side from a 4-3-3 to mirror Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 system. The alignment is intended to ensure young players arrive in the senior setup with a clear understanding of what is expected of them. The formation change is also said to give Gabriel specific exposure to the No. 10 role occupied by Bruno Fernandes in the first team.

Elsewhere in the Under-21s setup, Amir Ibragimov has been deployed as a false nine to replicate Carrick’s use of Matheus Cunha in that position, reinforcing the joined-up approach between the academy and senior staff.

Off the pitch, Gabriel attracted a different kind of attention after wiping all images from his Instagram profile without explanation, prompting concern and curiosity among supporters on social media. No reason has been offered for the move.
