JJ Gabriel follows Real Madrid accounts as 15-year-old pushes for Man Utd exit

Manchester United are facing the prospect of losing 15-year-old academy forward JJ Gabriel after the teenager formally requested to cancel his registration and leave Old Trafford as a free agent, with Real Madrid emerging as a likely destination.

Gabriel — full name Joseph Junior Andreou Gabriel — has been at United since the age of 11 and drawn comparisons to both Lionel Messi and Neymar for his performances at academy level. His decision to push for an exit has stunned club staff, coming despite manager Michael Carrick publicly praising his development and the player being in contention to make his senior debut against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

Had he featured in that fixture, Gabriel would have become United’s youngest ever first-team player. Instead, he will no longer be considered for selection while his future remains unresolved.

The trigger for his discontent appears to be a lack of minutes at senior level. His camp were reportedly frustrated after he was omitted from Carrick’s squad for the Champions League tie against Azerbaijani side Sabah, despite the season being only weeks old.

Gabriel’s social media activity has added fuel to speculation over his next move. His Instagram account now shows him following Real Madrid, their academy, La Liga, and a string of current Madrid players — among them Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Thibaut Courtois, Bernardo Silva, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Arda Güler, and Endrick. He also follows club legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane. Gabriel has deleted all previous posts from his account.

Real Madrid are said to be keen on signing him ahead of arch-rivals Barcelona. Because Gabriel holds an Irish passport, he will be eligible to join a European club when he turns 16 next month — a window not available to English players, who cannot move abroad until they are 18.

Carrick has made no secret of his regard for the teenager. “He’s obviously got a really big talent,” the United manager said. “He’s trained with us quite a bit and is getting experience all the time. He’s physically adapting to each step that he makes, and we’re just continuing his development.”

It remains unclear whether United will accept Gabriel’s request or attempt to resolve the situation and keep him at the club.
