JJ Gabriel eyes Real Madrid or Barcelona exit as Man United race to keep academy star

Manchester United are scrambling to convince academy starlet JJ Gabriel to stay at Old Trafford after the 15-year-old informed the club of his intention to leave, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain all said to be monitoring the situation.

Gabriel, widely considered one of the most gifted players to have come through United’s youth system in recent years, has enlisted agent Ali Barat to help facilitate a potential move. Barat’s connections are understood to have helped open doors at several of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Spanish outlet Sport reporting that Gabriel’s shortlist of preferred destinations is now narrowed to four clubs — two of them based in Spain.

Real Madrid and Barcelona lead the Spanish interest, while Bayern Munich and PSG are also in contention. Reports suggest Gabriel is particularly drawn to a move to Spain should United ultimately allow him to depart.

Despite the unrest, Gabriel remains registered with United for the remainder of the current season and cannot be deregistered under existing regulations. Club officials are said to be hopeful the situation can still be resolved and that the teenager can be persuaded to commit his future to the club.

A key date looms on the horizon: Gabriel turns 16 on October 6, at which point he becomes eligible to sign a scholarship agreement with United. He would then need to wait until his 17th birthday before he could put pen to paper on a professional contract — a timeline that gives the club a narrow but meaningful window to change his mind.

The uncertainty surrounding Gabriel adds to a difficult period for United, who have endured a disappointing start to their Premier League campaign. The club is also due to publish its latest financial results, which will offer a clearer picture of their economic position as they navigate a challenging spell both on and off the pitch.
