Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by Hull City at the MKM Stadium on the opening day of the Premier League season, a result that raised immediate questions about Michael Carrick’s squad depth and defensive organisation.

Hull, who finished sixth in the Championship last season, were the more physical and purposeful side throughout. Semi Ajayi opened the scoring after outmuscling Ayden Heaven, and Nobel Mendy doubled the lead to send the home crowd into raptures. United’s players — Bruno Fernandes pleading with the referee, Youri Tielemans throwing his arms in the air — looked visibly shell-shocked.

The midfield trio of Andrey Santos, Tielemans and Fernandes never imposed themselves on the game, and United’s attack offered little without a reliable focal point. Benjamin Sesko returned to the squad after a shin injury but came into the match having not played a single minute of pre-season, and his lack of sharpness showed.

Oli McBurnie gave Hull exactly what United lacked: a dominant, experienced centre-forward who caused problems from the first whistle. Noussair Mazraoui was forced into an early clearance to deny him, and goalkeeper Senne Lammens was tested on more than one occasion. Harry Maguire was the one United defender who appeared capable of matching Hull’s physicality, underlining concerns about the squad’s lack of aerial presence heading into the window.

Carrick cut a composed figure on the touchline throughout, a deliberate contrast to the animated Hull manager Sergej Jakirović. The United head coach consulted assistant Steve Holland as half-time approached, though the pair had plenty to address. Carrick’s measured demeanour has been a hallmark since he replaced Ruben Amorim, but composure in the dugout could not mask the disarray on the pitch.

Marcus Rashford was introduced from the bench at half-time, receiving warm applause from the away end on his return after an 18-month exile from the club. Carrick had praised Rashford for training “fantastically well” in the build-up to the fixture, and the forward had been handed the No.9 shirt before kick-off — a symbolic gesture that underlined how much United are counting on his revival.

The defeat is a sobering start for Carrick and raises pointed questions about whether United have done enough in the transfer market to address the physical and structural deficiencies that Hull so ruthlessly exposed.
