How Sunderland snatched Fofana on deadline day as Arsenal, Palace and Lyon's bankers collided

Malick Fofana signed for Sunderland on transfer deadline day after one of the most chaotic 24-hour sagas of the Premier League summer window, with Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Liverpool all circling the Belgian winger before the Stadium of Light claimed him.

The 21-year-old’s departure from Lyon was ultimately triggered by the club’s failure to reach the Champions League. After finishing fourth in Ligue 1, Lyon were eliminated from the play-off round by Fenerbahce, losing 2-3 on aggregate despite Fofana scoring in the second leg. As L’Equipe journalist Hugo Guillemet noted on X: “In the current context at Lyon, the bankers’ opinion carries more weight than that of the coach.” With the club’s financial backers demanding sales, Fofana’s three-and-a-half years in France were over.

The route to Sunderland was anything but straightforward. Lyon had valued Fofana at €50 million as recently as 2025, when both Chelsea and Liverpool were linked without completing a deal. This summer, the French club lowered their asking price to close to €40 million, but Arsenal — despite losing Gabriel Martinelli to Saudi Arabia in late August — declined to meet it. A cameo from Eberechi Eze in Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Aston Villa appeared to explain the Gunners’ reluctance to spend on the left flank.

With Arsenal out, Sunderland moved quickly and briefly appeared to be in pole position. Then Crystal Palace intervened. The Eagles had already made contact with Lyon earlier in the window, and with Sunderland’s deal not yet sealed, they launched a late attempt to redirect Fofana to south London. The twist: it had previously been reported that Fofana himself was unwilling to join Palace — making their attempted hijack all the more striking when, with ten hours left on deadline day, L’Equipe reported that Palace had become his preferred destination and that he was tentatively pencilled in for a medical with the Eagles.

An hour before that report, transfer journalist David Ornstein had revealed that Fofana had been given the green light to travel to Sunderland for a medical of his own. The competing claims underlined just how fluid the situation had become in the final hours of the window.

Ultimately, Sunderland held firm. Fofana completed his move to the newly promoted Premier League side, becoming one of the most high-profile arrivals of the club’s return to the top flight.
