Fernandes breaks silence with Instagram post ahead of Chelsea return after Carrick fallout
Bruno Fernandes has posted on Instagram for the first time since his public row with Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, signalling a likely return to the starting line-up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Bruno Fernandes posted a pre-match graphic to his Instagram stories on Friday, ending his social media silence following a high-profile falling-out with Manchester United manager Michael Carrick that saw the club captain dropped for Sunday’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
The dispute began after United’s 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, in which Fernandes was substituted for Joshua Zirkzee in the second half and visibly shook his head as he left the pitch. The Portuguese playmaker subsequently criticised Carrick’s tactical system in public, prompting the United manager to respond by suggesting his approach only functions when players press and run sufficiently.
Carrick then left Fernandes out of the matchday squad entirely for the Bournemouth fixture, with the 32-year-old not featuring for a single minute as United slipped to a heavy home defeat.
The two men held talks this week to resolve the situation, and Carrick addressed the media in the aftermath of those discussions. “Listen, we’re clear with the situation of the team, and as a football club at the moment,” he said. “He’s an important player for this group. He has been and he will be. Between us, we’ve got to make a difference and we’ve got to push things in a good direction.”
Carrick added that Fernandes remained fully committed to the club. “He’s fully committed to this football club, he’s fully committed to making things better. It doesn’t change for me. He’s the one that’s kind of led the team so well for many a game and many a year, and he’ll continue to do that.”
Fernandes’s Instagram post — a pre-match image featuring him in action with his signature — is widely being read as a sign that the captain is ready to return to the fold. United travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Saturday, with many expecting Fernandes to start.
