Henderson taken to hospital with wrist injury after freak post-match accident at World Cup
Jordan Henderson suffered a suspected wrist injury after falling over an advertising board during England's post-match celebrations following their 3-2 World Cup round-of-16 victory over Mexico, with manager Thomas Tuchel confirming the midfielder was taken to hospital for assessment.
Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital for wrist assessment after a freak accident during England’s post-match celebrations following their 3-2 World Cup round-of-16 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed. The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder fell over an advertising board while joining his teammates on the pitch and was carried off on a stretcher after being given oxygen.
The injury casts serious doubt over Henderson’s involvement in England’s quarter-final against Norway, and potentially his entire remaining tournament. Tuchel addressed the incident in his post-match press conference, saying: “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Henderson had already made headlines during the match itself, receiving a booking as an unused substitute after an altercation on the touchline during the closing stages — an unusual distinction for a player who did not set foot on the pitch competitively.
England’s match-winners offered differing assessments of the severity of the injury. Jude Bellingham described Henderson’s situation as “a bit of bother”, while captain Harry Kane was more relaxed: “Hendo just fell over there. I think he’s ok. Something to do with his arm.”
Henderson has made only one appearance at this World Cup, coming on as a late substitute in England’s final group-stage win over Panama. The Three Lions made history at the Estadio Azteca by inflicting only Mexico’s third defeat as tournament co-hosts, setting up a last-eight meeting with Norway.
No official update on Henderson’s condition had been released by the England media team at the time of writing.
