Jordan Henderson faces an uncertain World Cup after injuring his wrist during England’s post-match celebrations following their victory over Mexico, with manager Thomas Tuchel describing it as “quite a serious injury” and confirming the midfielder was taken to hospital.

Henderson, who has made only a handful of appearances at the tournament, was among the first England players onto the pitch at full time. After joining his team-mates in singing Oasis’s Wonderwall to supporters behind the goal, he attempted to jump over the advertising boards and appeared to lose his grip, falling to the floor. He was clearly in significant pain, and Dan Burn was first to reach him before medical staff arrived.

Henderson is expected to remain in Mexico City with a member of England’s medical staff while the rest of the squad return to Kansas City. Tuchel said: “He injured his wrist, he’s gone to hospital — it’s quite a serious injury. It doesn’t fit with the night. I don’t know if there will be a procedure.”

Captain Harry Kane initially played down concerns, saying: “Jordan just fell over there, I think he’s okay, just something to do with his arm.” But Jude Bellingham was less reassuring, admitting: “He’s in a bit of bother but our medical team have it under control.”

The injury is a bitter blow for Henderson, who has been booked twice despite his limited playing time and is now at risk of missing the remainder of the tournament at what is his fourth World Cup.
