Henderson updates fans from hospital bed after surgery on smashed forearm at World Cup 2026
Jordan Henderson has undergone successful surgery at the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute after breaking his left forearm in a freak fall at the Azteca, despite not featuring in England's Round of 16 win over Mexico. The midfielder is now ruled out for the quarter-finals and beyond.
Jordan Henderson is recovering in hospital after successful surgery on a badly broken left forearm, sustained in a freak accident following England’s Round of 16 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.
The midfielder did not play in the match but slipped and fell awkwardly while stepping over an advertising board on the pitch, fracturing his forearm in what his father Brian described as far more serious than the broken wrist initially reported. “It’s his left forearm — he’s just completely smashed it,” Brian told the Daily Mail.
While his England teammates flew to Miami after the hard-fought win, Henderson remained in Mexico City before being transferred to the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute, where surgeons Dr. Kenneth P. Unruh, Dr. Mark J. Winston, and Dr. Kirk McCullough performed the operation.
Posting on Instagram alongside a thumbs-up photo with his three surgeons, Henderson wrote: “Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday. Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Especially the 3 surgeons who carried out the operation.”
Henderson is now ruled out for the quarter-finals and beyond, but his father confirmed he has no intention of leaving the squad. “He won’t be leaving his team-mates. He’ll be there until it’s finished,” Brian said.
Despite the cruel blow, Henderson’s tournament has already secured him a place in England history. His appearance in the 2-0 Group L win over Panama made him the only England men’s player to represent the Three Lions at seven different major tournaments. He made his first tournament appearance at Euro 2012 and scored his first England goal at Euro 2020, contributing to the 4-0 quarter-final win over Ukraine.
