Henderson breaks arm in post-match celebration as England reach World Cup quarter-finals
Jordan Henderson fractured his arm after losing his footing while climbing over advertising boards following England's 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. Teammate Marc Guehi says the midfielder is on course for a 'speedy recovery' but is expected to miss the rest of the tournament.
Jordan Henderson fractured his arm celebrating England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium, with the midfielder expected to miss the remainder of the tournament and require surgery.
Henderson, who was an unused substitute in Sunday’s last-16 encounter, lost his footing while climbing over the advertising boards during the post-match celebrations. He received oxygen on the pitch before being taken off on a stretcher and transported to hospital.
Defender Marc Guehi provided an update on his teammate, saying: “Hendo’s a good man, he’s in a better place than he was yesterday. It was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we’re just glad that he’s on the road to a speedy recovery.”
England manager Thomas admitted to mixed emotions in the aftermath of the result. “My emotions are very mixed,” he said. “I’m just proud of the mentality and the attitude. Round of 32, round of 16 is the moment in tournaments where you find a way to win. We did it with pure mentality, with heart.”
“Mixed feelings also because I am exhausted, of course, and emotional, but also sad because Jordan got injured. He is at the moment at the hospital, so it is quite a serious injury. It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us.”
Despite his injury, Henderson is set to remain with the England squad for the duration of their tournament campaign.
The win itself was secured by Harry Kane’s penalty on the hour mark and a Jude Bellingham double, with ten-man England holding on for a memorable triumph. Their reward is a quarter-final against Norway in Miami on Saturday, where Guehi will face Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland, who has scored seven goals in the tournament after netting twice against Brazil.
“It’s going to be fun,” Guehi said of the Haaland matchup. “I know he’ll be up for it too. It’ll be good to see some familiar faces and we’ll try to do our best and get a win.”
