Enzo Fernández's stoppage-time header completes Argentina's stunning 3-2 comeback against Egypt
Trailing 2-0 with 23 minutes left, Argentina scored three times in 14 minutes to beat Egypt 3-2 in the World Cup round of 16 at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, with Enzo Fernández sealing the win in stoppage time.
Enzo Fernández headed home in the second minute of stoppage time to complete a remarkable Argentina comeback, as the defending champions overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt 3-2 in the World Cup round of 16 at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday.
Argentina looked in serious trouble when they trailed 2-0 entering the final quarter of the match, but three goals in 14 minutes turned the tie on its head in extraordinary fashion.
Cristian Romero started the recovery in the 79th minute, powering a header into the net from a Lionel Messi pass. Four minutes later, Messi himself drew Argentina level at 2-2 — the ball breaking to him amid a crowd of players near goal — with the finish registering as his 21st career World Cup goal, extending his own all-time record.
The winner arrived in the second minute of second-half stoppage time. Lisandro Martínez picked out Fernández with a precise delivery, and the Chelsea midfielder directed a header into the right side of the net to send Argentina through.
Argentina will face the winner of Colombia vs. Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
