Hansen makes seven changes to Black Ferns XV for WXV clash with Scotland

Whitney Hansen has made seven changes to the Black Ferns starting XV for their WXV Global Series fixture against Scotland, following New Zealand’s 28-14 victory over France last weekend.

Alena Saili comes into the starting side at inside centre, partnering Amy du Plessis, with Sylvia Brunt dropping to the bench. Shyrah Tuliau-Tua’a is named on the wing, Tara Turner starts at half-back, and Maddison Robinson takes the loosehead prop berth. Mo’omo’oga Palu earns her second Test cap at tighthead, while Layla Sae — returning from a nine-month absence following an ACL injury — joins Elinor-Plum King and Mia Anderson in the back row. Maama Mo’onia Vaipulu partners Laura Bayfield at lock.

Among the replacements, loosehead prop Ngano Tavake and 20-year-old Black Ferns Sevens full-back Maia Davis are both in line to earn their first Test caps.

Hansen said the Scotland match offered a timely opportunity for emerging talent. “While this campaign is certainly about growing continuity and connections, the match against Scotland presents an exciting opportunity for some new talent to experience Test rugby,” she said. “I want to congratulate Ngano and Maia on being named to make their Black Ferns debuts — it will be a special moment for them and their whanau.”

Of Tavake, Hansen added: “Her actions speak louder than her words. She’s incredibly humble, hardworking and has continued to impress us with what she brings to the group, both on and off the field.”

Davis, who transitions from the Sevens circuit to the fifteens Test arena, also drew particular praise from the head coach. “Maia is a talented athlete, and we’ve all loved supporting her growth in this environment. She has so much to offer this team, both now and into the future.”

Georgia Ponsonby captains the side for the fixture, winning her 43rd cap.
