Hamilton's first Ferrari win sparks Jeremy Clarkson's Peroni jab at historic British podium

Lewis Hamilton claimed his maiden victory as a Ferrari driver at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, leading an all-British podium with George Russell second and Lando Norris third — the first since 1968. Jeremy Clarkson celebrated the milestone while lamenting that the winner was backed by an Italian beer.

Lewis Hamilton took his first win as a Ferrari driver at the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Sunday, executing a three-stop strategy to become the first non-Mercedes driver to win a race this season. George Russell crossed the line second and Lando Norris third, completing the first all-British Formula 1 podium since Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill and John Surtees stood together at the 1968 United States Grand Prix.

The historic result drew a characteristically dry response from former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson. “Great to see three Brits on the podium in Barcelona,” Clarkson wrote on X, before adding: “Just a shame the winner was sponsored by an Italian beer” — a nod to Ferrari’s partnership with Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%. Clarkson, whose own Oxfordshire-brewed Hawkstone lager has grown into a commercial success, later mused: “One day, I hope Hawkstone is big enough to sponsor an F1 team. But which one?”

Norris reflected on the significance of the moment during the post-race press conference. “To share the podium with him and then with George, to have three Brits up there — the first time since 1968 — pretty special, pretty cool for us to represent our country that way,” the McLaren driver said.

Russell, who partnered Hamilton at Mercedes from 2022 until the end of 2024 before the seven-time champion moved to Ferrari, echoed the sentiment. “To be standing up here, three Brits, first time in 60 years, it’s a special feeling,” the Mercedes driver said.

The result reshapes the championship picture heading into the summer. Hamilton now sits 41 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli, while Russell is nine points behind Hamilton in third. The next round is the Austrian Grand Prix, scheduled for 26 to 28 June.
