Hamilton's first Ferrari win mirrors Schumacher's maiden victory at same Barcelona circuit

Lewis Hamilton claimed his first Formula 1 victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, a result that immediately prompted comparisons to the man whose career inspired his move to Maranello: Michael Schumacher.

F1 journalist and press conference host Tom Clarkson was among the first to highlight the historical echo. Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Clarkson pointed to a striking parallel between Hamilton’s emotional return to the top step of the podium and one of Ferrari’s most celebrated chapters.

“There’s a lovely symmetry because it was 30 years ago here at the Circuit de Catalunya, as it was called then, that Michael Schumacher won his first race for Ferrari,” Clarkson said.

Hamilton joined Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season after 12 years at Mercedes, during which he secured six of his seven world championship titles. He has spoken openly about the role Schumacher played in shaping that ambition, tracing it back to childhood.

“Growing up, watching the history, watching Michael Schumacher in his prime — I think probably all of us sit in our garage and see the screen pop up, and you see the driver in the red cockpit, and you wonder what it might be like to be surrounded by the red,” Hamilton said when his move was announced in 2024. “Without a doubt, even as a kid, I used to play on Grand Prix 2 as Michael in that car. So it definitely is a dream.”

Brazilian journalist Julianne Cerasoli, who joined Clarkson on the same podcast episode, noted that Hamilton did have one minor grievance about life at the Scuderia. “He only had one complaint, and that was when he made a comparison with Michael,” Cerasoli said. “Michael’s cockpit was red, and his is white. In his dreams, he would be driving and seeing red all over him, and he sees white from where he stands. That’s his only complaint.”

The win adds a layer of narrative symmetry to Hamilton’s Ferrari chapter: the circuit where Schumacher began his legendary run with the team is now also where his seven-time champion successor opened his own account.
