Hamilton and Russell trigger contract options, exposing Verstappen-McLaren links as negotiating theatre

Lewis Hamilton has automatically secured a third Ferrari season by meeting performance clauses, while Mercedes exercised George Russell's option through 2027 after the Spanish Grand Prix — leaving McLaren as little more than a bargaining chip in Max Verstappen's Red Bull talks.

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have both extended their current deals without signing new contracts, with options embedded in their existing agreements triggered in recent weeks — a development that strips away much of the credibility behind the recurring rumours linking Max Verstappen to McLaren.

Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, held a personal option guaranteeing him a third season with Ferrari, contingent on meeting performance clauses set out in the agreement he signed in January 2024. Those clauses were satisfied, automatically activating the extension and keeping him at Maranello.

At Mercedes, the process was slightly different. The Brackley team exercised the option in Russell’s contract following the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, securing the British driver through 2027. It will be Russell’s sixth season with the Silver Arrows and his third consecutive year alongside Kimi Antonelli. Because options were exercised rather than fresh terms agreed, neither extension requires a formal announcement or a new signing ceremony.

The timing is significant. Toto Wolff spent more than a decade pursuing Verstappen, and there was a window — precisely when Russell’s future was being settled — where circumstances might have favoured a move. Instead, Wolff chose continuity, a signal that Mercedes is satisfied with the balance it has found rather than gambling on a disruptive switch.

With both Hamilton’s Ferrari seat and Russell’s Mercedes berth now accounted for, attention has shifted to McLaren as the latest team to be drawn into the Verstappen rumour cycle. The pattern is well established in Formula 1: each time the exit clauses in Verstappen’s Red Bull contract become active, reports surface linking him to a rival outfit. In recent seasons that role fell to Mercedes; now that no seats remain at Brackley, McLaren has inherited the part.

The rumours may be rooted in something real — a conversation in the paddock, a member of Verstappen’s inner circle spotted in the wrong motorhome — but their primary function appears to be strengthening the Dutchman’s hand in ongoing negotiations with Red Bull. With Hamilton and Russell already committed elsewhere, McLaren is the only plausible alternative left to serve that purpose, which is precisely why the speculation has landed there.
