Brundle warns Russell is 'floundering' as Antonelli stretches F1 championship lead
Martin Brundle says George Russell is struggling to adapt to F1's new-generation cars, leaving the Mercedes driver 43 points adrift of team-mate Kimi Antonelli after the Italian won the British Grand Prix sprint race at Silverstone.
Martin Brundle has warned that George Russell is “floundering” in his battle to match Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, as the 19-year-old Italian extended his Formula 1 championship lead to 43 points during the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone.
The former F1 driver and pundit believes Russell’s difficulties stem from the transition away from the ground effect era, arguing that the new-generation machinery demands a fundamentally different driving style that the Briton has yet to master.
“I think George has gone from the ground effect era to these new cars. They are a bit more flighty,” Brundle said during the British Grand Prix weekend. “I don’t think he’s scared of a car that moves around but in terms of the absolute pace he can’t quite make it work.”
Brundle was careful not to question Russell’s ability outright, crediting his experience and determination for keeping him in championship contention. However, he was blunt about what is ultimately required. “If you’re going to win the world championship, you need to be the fastest as well, and right now he’s not in that team. I think he’s floundering a little bit as to know how to change that.”
The season began with Russell firmly in the ascendancy. He won the opening Australian Grand Prix and the Chinese sprint race, but Antonelli quickly seized momentum with back-to-back victories at the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix, becoming the youngest driver ever to lead the F1 standings in the process. The teenager added further wins at Miami, Canada and Monaco before Lewis Hamilton ended his streak with Ferrari’s first grand prix victory of the season at Barcelona.
Russell responded with a win of his own at the Austrian Grand Prix last week, offering a brief sign that he could reel in his team-mate. But Antonelli reasserted himself at Silverstone, winning the 17-lap sprint race after Hamilton had claimed pole position for it.
The championship standings now show Antonelli on 179 points, Russell second on 136, and Hamilton third on 132, leaving the title fight finely poised between all three drivers heading into the remainder of the season.
