Guendouzi suspended for four matches and fined €50,000 by UEFA

UEFA delivered its verdict Friday evening: Mattéo Guendouzi has been handed a four-match suspension and a €50,000 fine for his conduct during the Ligue des Champions playoff second leg between Fenerbahçe and Olympique Lyonnais (2-1).

The French international is sanctioned “for insulting persons present at the match, provoking spectators and breaching fundamental rules of good conduct,” according to UEFA’s official statement. Two of the four-match suspension are however subject to a one-year probationary period from the date of the decision, reducing the outright suspension to two matches.

Mason Greenwood, also involved in the incidents from this match, has been fined €30,000 and handed a one-match suspension “for breaching fundamental rules of good conduct.” This suspension is also subject to a one-year probationary period.

The heaviest sanction concerns Antonio Ferreira, Lyon’s goalkeeping coach. The European body has imposed a five-match suspension on him for “assault and battery” after he attempted to strike Guendouzi on the sidelines of the match. Two of these five matches are also covered by a one-year probationary period.
