FA Cup first round draw pairs Sheffield Wednesday with Oldham as ninth-tier Tadley Calleva dream of Barnsley upset
The FA Cup first round draw has been made, with Sheffield Wednesday facing Oldham Athletic and League One leaders Bradford City drawn against Marine. Ninth-tier Tadley Calleva, the competition's lowest-ranked survivors, could yet face Barnsley pending a replay with Aldershot.
The FA Cup first round draw has handed Sheffield Wednesday a local derby against Oldham Athletic, while League One leaders Bradford City will host Merseyside outfit Marine when ties are played on the first weekend of November.
The first round marks the entry of clubs from Leagues One and Two, bringing in several former winners. Wednesday have won the trophy three times, while 2013 champions Wigan Athletic and 2021 winners Leicester City are also in the draw. The Foxes, enduring a difficult spell after dropping to the third tier, face Oxford City.
Among the most compelling ties is the all-seventh-tier clash between Plymouth Parkway and Berkhamsted, both making the first round for the first time in their histories. Berkhamsted secured their place with a 2-1 win over Southend, and one of the two sides will carry their dream into the second round.
Ninth-tier Tadley Calleva remain the lowest-ranked side still in the competition and, subject to a replay against Aldershot Town, could face Barnsley in the first round proper — a potential giant-killing story in the making. Eighth-tier AFC Rushden & Diamonds, founded in 2011 following the demise of the original club, take on Burton Albion.
Sholing also make their first-round debut, while Peterborough United — managed by Robbie Savage, whose son Charlie is in the squad — have been drawn against Reading.
