Gourcuff boycotted by teammates in 2010: Ménès names Anelka, Evra, Abidal and Malouda
Former pundit Pierre Ménès claims that Yoann Gourcuff was deliberately sidelined by several France squad leaders during the 2010 World Cup, to the point that the coaching staff's video editor could not produce a single sequence showing his teammates passing him the ball.
Yoann Gourcuff did not struggle at the 2010 World Cup due to mental fragility, but because several France squad leaders deliberately isolated him: this is the thesis defended by former pundit Pierre Ménès, developed on his YouTube channel.
“Gourcuff is the story of a guy who was psychologically broken down by toxic players in the France team,” Ménès claims, specifically naming Nicolas Anelka, Éric Abidal, Patrice Evra and Florent Malouda among those who “wanted his head.”
The 63-year-old journalist provides two specific anecdotes to support his accusations. Before France’s first match against Uruguay, Malouda allegedly told manager Raymond Domenech that he was willing to defend for Zinedine Zidane, but refused to do so for Gourcuff. Domenech allegedly responded by leaving him out of the starting lineup. A few days later, Gourcuff reportedly complained to the manager about being boycotted on the pitch. Skeptical, Domenech allegedly asked the coaching staff’s video editor to compile sequences proving otherwise. Response two hours later: it was impossible to produce such footage, due to a lack of passes to the Breton midfielder.
“When you know what he went through in South Africa, there are others who would have become very weak too,” Ménès continues, also dismissing the idea of a rivalry with Franck Ribéry. “Ribéry was heavily criticized, and it’s not fair, because there was never any conflict between the two.”
Presented before the tournament as the natural successor to Zidane, Gourcuff had gone through the competition virtually unnoticed, failing to impact France’s play, as the team was eliminated in the group stage amid the Knysna scandal. Ménès believes the Netflix documentary about this episode overlooked these internal tensions: “It’s so much easier to only blame Domenech and absolve the players.”
None of the players mentioned has publicly responded to these claims.
