Liverpool carry a perfect three-from-three Champions League record into Wednesday’s league-phase fixture against Fenerbahce at the Chobani Stadium in Istanbul, four days after their 1-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal at Anfield.

The Reds have scored 12 goals in beating Atlético Madrid, LASK and Villarreal in their opening three European games this season, and will face a Fenerbahce side that is winless in the competition — drawing two and losing one — and was hammered 6-0 by Aston Villa in October.

Adding a sentimental subplot to the evening is the identity of the Fenerbahce dugout. Dirk Kuyt, who spent six years at Anfield before retiring, stepped in as interim manager last month following Ismail Kartal’s resignation and will now face his former club for the first time in a competitive setting.

Midfielder Trey Nyoni is expected to start again for Liverpool after impressing in the defeat to Arsenal, with Ryan Gravenberch sidelined through injury. The teenager, who has emerged as a key option for Arne Slot in recent weeks, is also reported to be close to agreeing a new contract at the club.

The loss to Arsenal on Sunday — Liverpool’s first home defeat to their rivals in 14 years — provided a rare setback in what has otherwise been a strong start to the season. A win in Istanbul would restore some momentum and keep Liverpool clear at the top of the Champions League standings.
