The Global Fight League has confirmed its long-delayed debut will take place on December 18 at Club Atletico Lanus in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the home-side Buenos Aires Gauchos facing the Miami Monsters in the promotion’s first official event.

The announcement comes after a turbulent year for the GFL, which had originally scheduled a pair of events for May 24 and 25 before cancelling both. Veteran fighter Urijah Faber subsequently raised concerns about the organisation’s finances, suggesting the league may have overstated the money it was committing to the project.

Full fighter rosters have not yet been confirmed, though former UFC title contender Marlon Moraes has already been announced as part of the Miami Monsters squad. The 38-year-old Brazilian, who carries a record of 24-13-1, returned to winning ways this past August with a unanimous decision over Maximiliano Perez — ending a seven-fight losing streak that stretched across stints in the UFC and PFL dating back to 2020. Roster reveals for the wider event are expected on Monday.

The GFL is the creation of former World Series of Fighting executive Darren Owen, who launched the promotion in 2025 with a team-based format designed to distinguish it from traditional MMA organisations. The league attracted a roster of high-profile names early on, including former UFC champions Tyron Woodley, Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold, Anthony Pettis, and Holly Holm.

“A new era in mixed martial arts officially begins,” the promotion wrote on Instagram. “After years of vision, determination, and building something truly different, we are proud to announce the first official event in Global Fight League history.”

Despite the setbacks that plagued the promotion’s launch year, Owen and the GFL appear committed to seeing the project through. Whether the December date holds — and which fighters ultimately fill out the cards — will be the next test of the league’s credibility.
