Glen Johnson urges £80m target Alex Scott to snub Chelsea and join Liverpool
Former Liverpool and Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has advised Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott to choose Liverpool over Chelsea, citing the Reds' stability and upward trajectory ahead of a potential £80m January move.
Glen Johnson has urged Alex Scott to reject Chelsea and sign for Liverpool, backing the Reds as the more stable and progressive club for the Bournemouth midfielder ahead of a potential £80 million January transfer.
Scott, 23, attracted heavy interest from several Premier League clubs last summer, with Chelsea submitting multiple bids that Bournemouth turned down. The Blues are expected to revive their pursuit in the January window, but Johnson — who played for both clubs — believes Liverpool represents the better destination.
“As of today, I’d have to say Liverpool [over Chelsea],” Johnson said. “That’s not necessarily due to him getting more game-time or anything like that, but I’m saying it more from the perspective of Liverpool as a club being a lot more stable and they’re going in a better direction. I’d choose Liverpool purely for stability, but I’m not sure which club he’d get more game-time at to be honest. You can certainly understand why both clubs are interested in him though.”
The comments come on the back of a strong run of form for Liverpool, who beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties at Anfield on Wednesday to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. The shootout followed a 1-1 draw, with Morgan Rogers putting Chelsea ahead from the spot five minutes before half-time before Cody Gakpo equalised three minutes later, also from 12 yards.
The result extended Liverpool’s winning run to five consecutive matches since their 3-0 defeat by Manchester City earlier this month, and Virgil van Dijk was quick to note the renewed optimism around the club, saying the “feel good factor” had returned.
One of the standout performers in that cup tie was 19-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni, who started and delivered a man-of-the-match display against a Chelsea engine room featuring Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. Teammate Rio Ngumoha was effusive in his praise afterwards, insisting the “sky is the limit” for the teenager and that Wednesday night was merely a glimpse of his potential.
With momentum building on the pitch and transfer targets being identified off it, Liverpool head into the winter window with growing confidence under Arne Slot as they push for a place in the Premier League title race.
