Giggs urges Man United to keep 15-year-old Gabriel as fan protest targets derby

Ryan Giggs has urged Manchester United to resist any temptation to loan out 15-year-old wonderkid JJ Gabriel, arguing the teenager belongs in the first-team environment at Old Trafford. The call comes as fan group The 1958 prepares a protest ahead of Sunday’s Premier League derby against Manchester City, with supporters angered by what they describe as unjust banning orders.

Gabriel made a significant impression last season, helping Darren Fletcher’s Under-18 side reach the FA Youth Cup final. Now eligible for Premier League football, he has featured in pre-season but is yet to receive a competitive first-team opportunity under Michael Carrick.

“I think he is sort of a generational talent, he’s got to stay,” Giggs said on Rio Ferdinand Presents. “There’s no point in going out on loan because he’s at the best place and he’d be dipping in and out of the first team, so that experience is invaluable. Not only the games and the training, but actually travelling with the team, seeing the expectation of Man United — the focus is so huge on Manchester United, you need to get used to that.”

Giggs added that loan moves are better suited to players aged 19 or 20, suggesting Gabriel’s development is best served by remaining close to the senior squad for the foreseeable future.

Off the pitch, United face a charged atmosphere ahead of the City derby. The 1958, a prominent supporter group, has called on fans to gather outside The Bishop Blaize pub from 3pm for a peaceful demonstration before the 4.30pm kick-off.

The group claims United have been banning loyal supporters without sufficient evidence as part of a crackdown on ticket touting. “A line has been crossed,” The 1958 wrote on social media. “Manchester United are sanctioning and banning loyal, generational Reds without clear and compelling evidence. These owners want rid of lifelong matchgoers. Their strategy is clear to see. It’s a cull! We challenged them. We demanded the unproven suspensions stop. They haven’t listened. Show the evidence or lift the bans.”

United head into the derby having picked up four points from their opening three Premier League fixtures against Hull City, Ipswich Town and Everton, conceding twice in each of those games. Before Sunday’s clash with City, Carrick’s side face Azeri champions Sabah in their Champions League opener.
