Gasly takes shock maiden pole as Antonelli, Albon and Lawson drop to back for Italian GP

Pierre Gasly secured a stunning maiden pole position for the 2026 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, with the Alpine driver heading the provisional starting grid ahead of race day at Monza. The result marks a landmark moment for Gasly, whose previous career best had fallen short of a front-row start at one of the sport’s most iconic circuits.

However, the grid picture was significantly reshaped by a trio of penalties handed down after qualifying. Kimi Antonelli, who had been among the headline names following his home-crowd qualifying performance for Mercedes, was sent to the back of the grid as a result of a power unit change. The Italian teenager, racing on home soil, now faces a recovery drive through the field at Monza.

Alongside Antonelli at the rear of the grid are Williams driver Alex Albon and Red Bull’s Liam Lawson, both of whom also incurred penalties for exceeding their permitted power unit allocations. All three had qualified higher up the order before the stewards applied the grid drops.
