Gaethje declares UFC legacy 'fulfilled' after stunning Topuria upset at UFC 250

Justin Gaethje says he has nothing left to prove in MMA after pulling off one of the biggest upsets in recent UFC history, finishing Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 to claim the lightweight title on his third attempt at undisputed gold.

“I do feel like I have fulfilled my legacy,” Gaethje said in a recent interview, adding that he is content with his career regardless of what comes next.

The new champion pointed to the respect he has earned from fans and the way he has carried himself through both victories and defeats as the foundation of that legacy. Crucially, Gaethje singled out his BMF title loss to Max Holloway as a defining moment — one that made the Topuria win feel all the more significant.

“I think that Max Holloway was a huge building block to the person and the legacy that I built,” Gaethje said. “Without that, this win wouldn’t have been that special, especially with Ilia beating him, knocking him out and me going in there and finding success. Yeah, I couldn’t write it any better.”

The narrative thread Gaethje describes is a compelling one. Holloway defeated him for the BMF title, only to be finished by Topuria shortly afterwards. Gaethje then went into the cage as a significant underdog against the same man who had stopped Holloway, and emerged as champion — a sequence of events that lends his title reign a particular weight.
