Gabby Logan twice turns down Royal invitation to stay focused on World Cup duty
BBC presenter Gabby Logan has declined two separate invitations to collect her OBE because both dates clashed with her World Cup 2026 broadcasting commitments. Logan is set to become the first woman to lead coverage of a men's World Cup final on the BBC.
Gabby Logan has turned down two invitations to collect her OBE from the Royal Family, with both dates falling during her World Cup 2026 broadcasting commitments for the BBC.
Logan, who is based at the BBC’s Salford headquarters for the duration of the tournament, is set to make history as the first woman to lead coverage of a men’s World Cup final on the corporation. The honour, awarded in the 2026 New Year Honours list, remains officially uncollected as a result of her scheduling conflicts.
“Unfortunately, the date they sent me was the date of my first match in the World Cup,” Logan told Hello! magazine. “So I obviously had to turn that one down.”
A second invitation also had to be declined when it clashed with the knockout stages. A new date has since been arranged, with Logan confirming: “We’ve agreed that I’ll go in the autumn at some point.”
The Leeds-born presenter, daughter of Wales football legend Terry Yorath, faces a further personal reminder of the tournament’s bittersweet nature on Friday. She will front the BBC’s first primetime fixture of the competition — Canada against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto — a match that could easily have featured her father’s former side.
Wales were eliminated from the UEFA World Cup play-offs by Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties, with Bosnia subsequently defeating Italy on spot-kicks to secure their place at the tournament. The result means Logan will be presenting coverage of the very team that ended Wales’ hopes.
The BBC has chosen to base its World Cup studio at its Salford headquarters for the group stage, a decision that has drawn some debate within broadcasting circles.
