Furlong cited for alleged genital grab and faces ban that could end his Nations Championship
Leinster and Ireland prop Tadhg Furlong has been cited by the URC after allegedly grabbing Munster's Gavin Coombes in the groin during Saturday's interpro derby. If found guilty under Law 9.27, Furlong could miss Ireland's entire Nations Championship campaign.
Tadhg Furlong faces a lengthy suspension after the United Rugby Championship confirmed the Ireland and Lions tighthead prop has been cited for an alleged genital grab during Leinster’s interpro derby win over Munster on Saturday.
The citing complaint alleges that Furlong grabbed the groin area of Munster number eight Gavin Coombes in the 37th minute. Coombes raised the matter with referee Andrew Brace at the time, but the TMO was unable to provide supporting video evidence, and no action was taken during the match.
The URC’s citing commissioner subsequently filed a formal complaint, invoking Law 9.27, which states: “A player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship including but not limited to grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals.” Details of the disciplinary hearing are yet to be announced.
Recent precedents suggest the sanction, if a guilty verdict is returned, would be severe. England loosehead Joe Marler received a 10-week ban in March 2020 after grabbing Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones during a Six Nations match. More recently, in October 2025, South Africa front-rower Jan-Hendrik Wessels was handed a nine-match suspension for a similar offence against Connacht’s Josh Murphy in a URC fixture.
A comparable punishment would rule Furlong out for the remainder of the calendar year and, critically, through Ireland’s Nations Championship campaign — a significant blow to Andy Farrell’s squad given Furlong’s status as one of the world’s premier tighthead props.
Furlong has not yet commented publicly on the allegation, and the outcome will depend on the disciplinary panel’s findings once a hearing date is set.
