French Football Federation Withdraws Support for Infantino Ahead of 2027 FIFA Election

The French Football Federation (FFF) is preparing to withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino, who is running for re-election as FIFA president. According to AFP, an executive committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday at FFF headquarters to formalize this position, which is expected to be made public immediately after.

France is thus joining a growing European front. Sweden, Scotland, Italy, Belgium and Hungary have already signaled their lack of confidence in the 56-year-old Italian-Swiss leader. The turning point dates back to a now-abandoned project to sell World Cup stakes to private investors — an initiative that had provoked an outcry within continental governing bodies and cost Infantino several major backers.

The situation remains paradoxical nonetheless: at this stage, no other candidate has declared their intention to run in the election scheduled for March 18, 2027 in Rabat. Infantino therefore remains the only candidate, despite the erosion of his support base in Europe. The FFF itself notes that its decision could change in the event of a “major reversal of circumstances,” leaving open the possibility of further developments before the vote.
