France reclaimed first place in the FIFA rankings from Argentina on Tuesday evening, buoyed by their 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

The Blues now total 1,916.24 points, compared to 1,907.40 for the Albiceleste, who have not yet played their Round of 16 match. This gain of 9.40 points — the reward for a win against the world’s 37th-ranked team — is enough to place France at the summit, and this ranking will not change before the quarter-finals.

The mechanics of the FIFA ranking system explain why Argentina cannot make up the deficit in the next round. Lionel Messi and his teammates face Cape Verde, the world’s 64th-ranked nation. The system weights the points awarded according to the level of the opponent: beating a lower-ranked team mechanically yields fewer points than a win against Sweden. Even in the event of a victory against Cape Verde, the Albiceleste will therefore not be able to overtake France.

To reclaim the top of the rankings, Argentina must at minimum reach the quarter-finals and accumulate enough points in their upcoming matches. France, for their part, continues an unbeaten run since the tournament’s start and enters the Round of 16 in a position of strength, both on the pitch and in the FIFA figures.
