Chelsea sign Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47m in Xabi Alonso's first deal
Chelsea have completed the signing of Atalanta defender Marco Palestra on a seven-year deal worth £47 million including add-ons. The 21-year-old Italian international becomes Xabi Alonso's first signing as Chelsea manager.
Chelsea have signed Atalanta defender Marco Palestra for £47 million including add-ons, securing the 21-year-old on a seven-year contract in Xabi Alonso’s first transfer as manager at Stamford Bridge.
Palestra, who holds two senior caps for Italy, had been strongly linked with Inter Milan before Chelsea stepped in with a superior financial package and more attractive wage offer. The deal represents a clear statement of intent from a club that finished tenth in the Premier League last season.
Alonso, who officially took charge on Wednesday, spoke to Palestra directly about his vision for the team — a conversation the defender cited as a key factor in his decision. “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” Palestra said on the club’s website. “We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”
Palestra made his senior debut for Atalanta in December 2023 before spending last season on loan at Cagliari, where he was named Serie A’s defender of the season. He earned his first international cap during Italy’s World Cup qualifying play-offs, though the Azzurri failed to reach the tournament.
The signing is the first in what appears to be a significant defensive rebuild at Chelsea. Marc Cucurella has already left for Real Madrid, and the club are understood to be weighing a bid for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. Full-back Malo Gusto, currently representing France at the World Cup, is also expected to depart, with Chelsea reportedly valuing the former Lyon player at £75 million and Manchester City among his suitors.
In midfield, an £8 million bid for Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka has been rejected. Chelsea are also bracing for the potential exit of Enzo Fernandez, who informed the club’s hierarchy in May that he wishes to leave. The club are prepared to listen to offers of £120 million for the Argentina international.
