England fans boo hydration break as Three Lions trail DR Congo at half-time
Supporters watching England's World Cup last-16 clash against DR Congo at Manchester's Depot Mayfield fan zone jeered a three-minute hydration break in the first half, with the team already trailing 1-0 at the interval.
England fans at a Manchester fan zone booed a three-minute hydration break during the first half of the Three Lions’ World Cup 2026 knockout match against DR Congo on Wednesday, 1 July, with the team already trailing 1-0 at half-time.
Supporters gathered at Depot Mayfield in Manchester to watch the last-16 tie, and their frustration with the stoppage was audible. Videos shared on X showed large groups of fans jeering as the break was announced, adding to a wave of criticism the interruptions have attracted throughout the tournament.
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, introduced mandatory hydration breaks roughly halfway through each half. The measure was put in place to account for anticipated high temperatures at certain venues, though the breaks have been applied in every match regardless of conditions — a detail that has irritated many supporters.
Time was added on at the end of the half to compensate for the stoppage, but that did little to ease the mood among England fans already anxious about the scoreline.
Fans also vented on social media during the match. “Two most annoying words in this tournament. HYDRATION BREAK,” one supporter posted on X. Another quipped: “I’m going to need a much longer hydration break to get through this England match.” A third was more blunt: “these hydration break s*** is so stupid.”
The reaction reflects a broader tension at this World Cup between player welfare measures and the matchday experience for supporters, who feel the rhythm of games is being disrupted at critical moments.
