Manchester United approached Deschamps, but former France manager remains unmoved
According to Foot Mercato, Manchester United officials have approached Didier Deschamps in recent days to succeed Michael Carrick. The former France manager, free since the 2026 World Cup, is reportedly not attracted by the Manchester project.
Manchester United made contact with Didier Deschamps to offer him the manager’s position, Foot Mercato revealed on Thursday. The former France national team manager, free since the end of the 2026 World Cup after fourteen years leading the Bleus, is reportedly not tempted by the idea of crossing the Channel.
The Red Devils are going through one of the worst periods in their recent history. After nine Premier League matches, the club has only one victory and sits in a worrying seventeenth place. A hard-fought victory in the Ligue des Champions against AS Rome (3-2), following a dramatic home comeback, was not enough to mask the severity of Michael Carrick’s situation on the bench.
It is in this context that the Manchester board has stepped up its approaches. Besides Deschamps, the name of Julian Nagelsmann, former Germany manager, has also been mentioned in the corridors of Old Trafford.
Deschamps, for his part, is taking time to rest since the end of the World Cup before considering his next project. While he has managed in Ligue 1 and Serie A, he has never managed an English club. He is familiar with the Premier League, however, having played there for Chelsea during the 1999-2000 season, but that apparently is not enough to attract him to Manchester.
