Darren Fletcher publicly confronted an abusive fan in the Old Trafford car park following Manchester United’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah on Thursday night, drawing loud cheers from supporters who witnessed the exchange.

Footage circulating on social media shows the former United midfielder telling the supporter: “Hey, listen, it doesn’t matter, you can’t speak like that.” The fan had reportedly been directing abuse at players who were not stopping to engage with the crowd. Fletcher then delivered a pointed follow-up: “You’re the reason people don’t sign” — a line that prompted another burst of applause from those nearby before they broke into a chant of his name as he returned to his vehicle.

The incident came on the back of a comfortable evening for Michael Carrick’s side, who marked their return to European competition with a polished display. Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez all got on the scoresheet as United controlled the match from start to finish.

Carrick was satisfied with what he saw. “I think it was a good performance, individually, collectively, pretty much all the way through the game, from start to finish,” he said. “Boys that started, boys that came on the pitch, clean sheet, some goals and some good, exciting football. It was a good night all round.”

There was one note of concern to emerge from the evening, however. Captain Fernandes was spotted leaving Old Trafford walking tentatively after completing the full 90 minutes.
