Five England players one booking away from semi-final suspension after Mexico win
Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly and Jordan Henderson must all avoid a yellow card against Norway in the quarter-final to remain eligible for the semi-finals. Jarell Quansah is already suspended for that tie after his red card against Mexico.
Five England players are walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway, with Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly and Jordan Henderson each one booking away from a semi-final ban.
The situation crystallised during England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in Mexico City, in which Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane converted a penalty to send Thomas Tuchel’s side through. However, Guehi, O’Reilly, Rice and Henderson were all booked during the match, joining Bellingham — who was cautioned in the last-32 victory over DR Congo — on a single yellow card in the knockout rounds.
Right-back Jarell Quansah will miss the Norway quarter-final entirely after receiving a straight red card for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo. He will be available again should England reach the semi-finals.
How the yellow card rules work at this World Cup
Bookings accumulated during the group stage were wiped clean after that phase ended and carry no relevance in the knockout rounds. From the last 32 onwards, any player who collects two yellow cards across the last 32, last 16 and quarter-finals will be suspended for one game.
Yellow cards reset after the semi-finals, meaning a caution picked up at that stage does not carry over to the final, regardless of a player’s prior knockout-round record.
Red cards, by contrast, carry no equivalent reset. A player sent off in a semi-final would be ineligible for the final.
The Balogun precedent
One notable development has complicated the disciplinary picture at this tournament. FIFA suspended the red card issued to United States striker Florian Balogun — earned against Bosnia in the last 32 — for one year, allowing him to feature in the USA’s last-16 tie against Belgium. The decision drew widespread attention after US President Donald Trump publicly thanked FIFA, prompting speculation that political pressure had influenced the ruling.
England’s suspension risk in full
For England, the immediate concern is straightforward: Bellingham, Rice, Guehi, O’Reilly and Henderson must all come through the Norway quarter-final without a booking to be available in the semi-finals. Given their importance to Tuchel’s system — Bellingham and Rice in particular as the engine of the midfield — the stakes of any reckless challenge or dissent are unusually high.
