Fifteen-year-old Gabriel nets and assists twice to press his Man Utd first-team case

JJ Gabriel announced himself at under-21 level with a goal and two assists as Manchester United’s U21s demolished Ipswich Town 5-0 at Leigh’s Progress with Unity Stadium on Monday night, just 48 hours after the senior side’s chastening loss at Hull City.

The forward, who does not turn 16 until October, was making his competitive debut for the U21s and stood out despite being physically dwarfed by several Ipswich players. The performance offered manager Michael Carrick a timely lift after a difficult weekend in the Championship.

Gabriel is no stranger to Carrick’s attention. The United head coach invited him to train with the first team last season and took him on the club’s pre-season tour this summer. Until now, his age had prevented any first-team involvement, but those restrictions no longer apply and it would be a surprise if he does not feature for the senior squad at some point this season.

Carrick spoke about the teenager in March, striking a careful balance between enthusiasm and patience. “JJ’s doing really well,” he said. “He is a big talent, it is pretty obvious and he has had a good season for the U18s. We think an awful lot of him. But patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and developing him and picking the right moment to step up.”

How quickly Gabriel is pushed into first-team contention may depend on United’s activity in the final week of the transfer window. After a promising start to the summer — with Youri Tielemans among the new arrivals — momentum appeared to stall, raising concerns among supporters that the progress made under Carrick in the second half of last season was at risk of being squandered.

There are signs of renewed movement, however. Long-time target Carlos Baleba is reportedly on his way from Brighton for £70 million, and left-back Ferdi Kadioglu could follow his Seagulls team-mate to Old Trafford. Calls for further attacking reinforcements persist, and the outcome of those negotiations may yet determine whether Gabriel’s next step comes sooner than anyone anticipated.
