Ferdinand warns Martinez public outburst at United board rarely ends well for the player
Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United's board to make a decisive call on Lisandro Martinez after the Argentine defender publicly criticised club executives following the 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
Rio Ferdinand has called on Manchester United’s board to make a “big decision” over Lisandro Martinez’s future at the club, after the Argentine centre-back publicly attacked the club’s transfer hierarchy in the wake of Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Martinez did not hold back after the final whistle, criticising those responsible for United’s transfer strategy and arguing the squad lacked the depth to compete at the highest level in Europe despite a number of midfield additions this summer. He also directed scrutiny towards technical director Jason Wilcox rather than manager Michael Carrick, whom he suggested could only work with what he was given.
The outburst has prompted widespread speculation that Martinez could face disciplinary action. Ferdinand, speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, drew stark parallels with previous high-profile departures from Old Trafford.
“These things don’t end well, man,” the 47-year-old said. “Roy Keane spoke publicly — there could have been no bigger player than him, he was the captain at the time — and he left days later. Cristiano Ronaldo called out individuals within the club, the manager, the ownership. He left straight after. Ralf Rangnick said things needed to be done. I’m not disagreeing with what some of these guys have said, by the way. I’m just saying this is what happens when someone talks out about the hierarchy at the football club.”
Ferdinand stressed that the full picture depends on what happened behind closed doors before Martinez spoke to the media. He said the key questions are whether the defender had already raised his concerns with management and whether his new teammates — including summer arrivals Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, and Andre Santos — were aware of the context before the comments became public.
“I think if I was a player, I would have liked him to come to me first, or to address the dressing room first before he went and spoke publicly like that,” Ferdinand added. “I don’t think it’s cool for players to be hearing this firstly in the media rather than face-to-face with one of your team-mates, which makes it an awkward situation in the dressing room.”
The episode adds further pressure to United’s board at a turbulent moment in the club’s Champions League campaign, with the dressing room atmosphere now under as much scrutiny as the results on the pitch.
