RC Lens suffered a second European setback, losing 0-2 to Sporting Portugal at Bollaert on Tuesday evening in the second matchday of the Champions League league phase. Luis Suarez (22nd minute) and Issa Doumbia (74th minute) sealed the defeat for the Artésiens, who were unable to respond at home.

The northern club, which had launched its campaign with a victory at Slavia Prague (2-3), now finds itself in serious difficulty. According to Football meets data projections, Lens has plummeted to 26th place in the overall standings, falling out of the top 24 that grants access to the knockout round playoffs — the top eight qualify directly for the round of 16. Sporting, meanwhile, enters the top 8.

The schedule awaiting Florian Thauvin and his teammates is particularly demanding. Next week, the Sang et Or travel to Belgium to face Club Bruges, a direct competitor in the race for the top 24. This will be followed by matches against Como and Leipzig, before a formidable finale: Manchester City at Bollaert and then Liverpool at Anfield in November.

The internal context complicates matters further. Since the victory in Prague, the club has changed managers, with Dino Toppmöller being replaced by Yannick Cahuzac. The new technical direction has not been enough to halt the European decline.

For LOSC, the situation is scarcely more reassuring. Beaten 3-0 at Arsenal on Tuesday evening in their second European outing, the Dogues sit at 29th place in the projected standings. Lille must bounce back at home against Galatasaray next week, before a trip to Norway to face Bodo/Glimt and a clash with Bayern Munich scheduled for November 25 at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
